Met a girl, wanted to impress, ran 11.2 miles, she still had a boyfriend
In reality this is truly what powered to be the run an extra miles 7 than I was planning too. Granted, I do struggle to sit/lay by the pool for hours on end just to look like an extra from a reality show, thus a tad restless, but 11.2 miles is vastly greater than I have ever run before.
After making the most of the hotel’s breakfast buffet and donning my ultra-tight tri-suit, I wore a t-shirt over the top to hide my unsightly bits, plus my Camalbak only quarter full (i was only going to do 4 miles at that point) I was ready to head off.
I headed out of the hotel to be hit by a wall of heat. It was only 0930 but the sun was blazing down, I thought of cold, wet and all together miserable English weather back home and chuckled to myself.
I put one foot in front of another and I was off. I used the beautiful cycle/walk paths that stretched along the roads. Along the path were amazingly well maintained gardens and every few hundred metres was a seating area or a children’s park toy such as a roundabout or climbing frame. There was a sting in the tail of this glorious running highway: hills, and boy were they steep. Running on the flat can be monotonous but i had great scenery, there was no need to punish my good fortune.
After completing one 3.75 mile lap, I was not ready to call it a day so thought I would do one more. 7 miles had a nice ring to it. I had completed 5 miles a few weeks earlier and I still had most of the water in the Camalbak, so that would be fine.
I was starting to feel over confident with this newly required vigor through miles 4 and 5. Then mile 6 came and the joy was gone, this was starting to get rather tiring and I was losing motivation. I reached into my bag and gobbled up a energy gel, I have never like them but they do save lives (and egos).
What, you want to do another lap? you can be a hero, just do it. I ran past the hotel. Whatever was in my mind or in that gel I still wonder today, but oh my i was/still so proud I did carry on for another lap. The sun was scalding my skin and water was low but a soldiered on.
And there is was, I stared down the barrel of a gun and came away unscathed – Ok, maybe a tad hyperbolic but it did feel amazing, maybe the fabled runners high.
Now the bit I not so proud of. I got back to the pool to tell my sunbathing firend what I just achieved. This would be fine was it not for the fact that I said it is a slightly raised voice and in earshot of the pretty young lady – no one likes a humble brag*.
To conclude, I ran a bit and did not get the girl.
